Jill’s Next Record

Jill Sobule

How would you like to be an executive producer at a promising new record company (or at least buy a T-shirt that says you are)?

What about having your own theme song?

Have you ever wanted to have a concert at your house with a semi-famous singer-songwriter?

And how would you like to sing with me, despite your lack of talent, on my next big hit?

A few months ago, I came to the readers of AllThingsD.com for advice on how to put out my next album (CD, digital release, 8-track cassette).

After some very thoughtful and useful comments (and one really bummer letter from some black hole of a human), I have decided to make my first move.

I am launching a Web site for fans and empathetic acquaintances to contribute to my recording fund in exchange for fab prizes and services.

As I told you before, I have always relied upon the evil or rather inept record company to pay for the studio, musicians, producer, publicity, marketing and the rest.

For that, all I got were lousy deals, two records out of print with no rights to self-release them and paranoid executives who thought that the cover of my CD was too provocative for Wal-Mart. I had an illustration of a Prozac capsule, which they apparently thought was too pro-drugs.

Mind you, I was glad, and still am, that I was signed back then. It was the only game going. But now I am asking you to check out my Web site, before anyone else, and either tell me what you think, or better yet, dive in and add to the tote board.

Oh, by the way, I have new songs, which I am finally proud of, great musicians and the amazing Don Was on board.

Here’s my site: Jill’s Next Record.

About Voices

This is a section of the All Things Digital Web site featuring posts from around the Web, from other Dow Jones properties and also original pieces we solicit. The section is now explicitly labeled that it comes "from other Web sites."

We are fully aware of the controversies around how linking and aggregating is done on the Web and we, in no way, are attempting to "scrape" original content created by others. Instead, regarding third-party posts, we are trying to point readers of this site to other posts from around the Web that we admire and are trying to do so in the quickest manner possible.

The Internet is full of terrific content that is not ours and we want to help our readers find it by making editorial suggestions--Look, Mom, no algorithm!--of posts we think are worth their time.

That is why we have made even more changes to Voices to ensure we do this in the most transparent and timely way. While we don't expect that everyone will agree with our policies, we have made changes that reflect our intent in pointing to content outside our site.

So here is exactly what we do:

About the Site

Because the site is wholly owned by Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, we aim to adhere to the journalistic standards of the best of the mainstream media. We want to be first, and sassy, but also well sourced and accurate. We will offer lots of opinion and analysis, but plenty of fact as well.
