The question has been asked: were they lent laptops or given them?

They did the same stunt to gen up a lot of good publicity for Vista.

Slowly but surely the public loses trust in journalists that can be so easily bought off with trinkets.

These days I want to see the resume of any journalist making technical recommendations. What were they before they got into journalism? An orchestra leader? An event organizer? PR flak for a company?

There are very few people doing this for a living who have an actual technical background. Microsoft knows this and takes advantage of it. Nothing really new about that.

Companies that want to get it right had better be doing their own product comparisons.
