Apple has put him in charge of the division Tony Faddell (the father of the iPod) was running, and who is leaving the company (along with his wife).

IBM simply doesn't want him taking intellectual property to Apple for a year. But what good would that do? Apple isn't about to drop Intel processors for PowerPC again for full-sized Macintoshes.

Their other acquisition of a non-fab chip maker, the name of which escapes me, is likely to become the designer of future iPod and iPhone chips (as well as a small tablet Mac maybe?). Putting Papermaster in charge of that project is a great idea, since the company's chips were PowerPC-based.
