The Effort to Save Duke University’s Usenet Server

The story of the newsgroups began in 1979 at Duke University. There, students Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis brought to life one of the most enduring aspects of the Internet – Usenet, or the newsgroups. Usenet was the first public social gathering places, where people could find common topics to discuss a wide variety of subjects; for example, the newsgroup talk.politics.misc would focus its subject matter on political discussion.
