Sony, Japanese Broadcasters Offer 3-D TV Series

Television makers and broadcasters are ramping up their efforts to fix the shortage of content available for 3-D TV, one factor slowing the product’s spread. The latest effort: Sony Corp. and two TV broadcasters said Wednesday they are launching Japan’s first 3-D drama series, which the companies say could also be the world’s first.

The drama, “Tokyo Control,” portrays the life of men and women working at the Tokyo Air Traffic Control Center to help aircraft safely navigate the skies over Japan. The 10-episode series will be shown in 3-D biweekly on cable station SkyPerfecTV’s specialized 3-D channel starting Jan. 19.

The program was directed and produced by the staff of local broadcaster Fuji Television Network Inc., and Sony provided 3-D technical support.
