GameStop Bulks Up on the Web

GameStop Corp. has reached agreements to acquire two companies to bolster its online strategy, as the largest global retailer of videogames seeks to navigate a potentially treacherous move into electronic distribution of games.

The retailer based in Grapevine, Texas, said it has acquired Spawn Labs Inc., a company that provides technology for playing games that run remotely on machines in data centers, rather than locally on a personal computer or console near the player. GameStop said it also has cut a deal to acquire a subsidiary of Stardock Systems Inc. called Impulse, which runs a service that lets consumers purchase and download computer games to their PCs. GameStop didn’t disclose financial terms for either transaction.
