<p>In what I must admit is a shocking turn of events, the Associated Press has moved beyond attacking Google (GOOG) and others it has branded as content “thieves” to embrace a page from its opponents’ playbook.</p>
<p>Literally.</p>
<p>In an internal AP memo obtained by Talking Points Memo, a senior managing editor, Mike Oreskes, states that when two AP reporters found that one bookstore had inadvertently placed Sarah Palin’s “Going Rogue” on sale five days before the official release date, “They bought a copy, ripped it from its spine and scanned it into the system so it could be read and electronically searched.</p>

<p>Does this sound familiar?</p>
<p>At the office, you&#8217;ve got a sluggish computer running aging software, and the email system routinely badgers you to delete messages after you blow through the storage limits set by your IT department. Searching your company&#8217;s internal Web site feels like being teleported back to the pre-Google (GOOG) era of irrelevant search results.</p>
<p>At home, though, you zip into the 21st century. You&#8217;ve got a slick, late-model computer and an email account with seemingly inexhaustible storage space. And while Web search engines don&#8217;t always figure out exactly what you&#8217;re looking for, they&#8217;re practically clairvoyant compared with your company intranet.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">The Five Questions</h4>
<p class="question"><em>What makes Aviary different from Adobe CS or Garage Band?</em></p>
<p>Aviary can do lots of things, but there&#8217;s nothing to install. It&#8217;s flash-based and runs right in your browser. The benefit of running that stuff in the cloud is every time you save it, it saves to our servers, and you can access it from any computer.</p>

<p>We also make it easy to do the basic edits on Aviary. Then, for example, [you could] move the project to Photoshop for more heavy-duty stuff. You can also open other peoples&#8217; works&#8211;if they haven&#8217;t made them private with a premium account&#8211;and see how they did something. We call it &#8220;creation on the fly.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question"><em>Are users ready for this?</em></p>
<p>Absolutely. We&#8217;re seeing it [cloud computing] more with Gmail; people are moving more of their applications to the Web. I think online image editing is still in its nascent stages, but it&#8217;s going to get there. [Aviary is] definitely building for the power user, the top of the pyramid, but it will trickle down. </p>
<p class="question"><em>You just completed a successful round of funding. How will Aviary expand?</em></p>
<p>Well, we&#8217;d love to get into bed with Flickr [Yahoo’s (YHOO) popular image-sharing site]. We can already pull images right from your Flickr account, and very shortly we’ll be able to push images back via their API. Currently, there’s a big hole for video editing and stuff for YouTube.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s a really, really tough problem to solve because of the file sizes involved. There is also music creation possibly, as opposed to just looping things together and adding effects.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Every geek has a memory where they saw something new and had to say to themselves, &#8220;Dang, I love living in the future.&#8221; What&#8217;s yours?</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;ll tell you exactly what it is because it really stands out. I don&#8217;t know if you&#8217;ve ever been to Wannado City in Florida. It&#8217;s a kids&#8217; amusement park that&#8217;s entirely indoors. It looks like a huge city, and the kids can do all the jobs&#8211;they can be police officers, and there&#8217;s fire trucks going back an forth that the kids can sit in, and there&#8217;s a bakery&#8211;it&#8217;s a really cool place. But what struck me as cool is that they give this bracelet to each person in the family when you walk in, and at any given moment you can walk to a kiosk, swipe your bracelet and see where anyone else in your family is in the building. I assume they are using some kind of RFID tags, but when I saw that I was like, &#8220;Wow, that’s really awesome.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question"><em>If you could change one thing about the Internet, what would it be?</em></p>
<p>The worst would have to be bad advice in tech support forums. Sometimes, I go on there, and there is just really bad advice. I look at it and think, &#8220;I could do that better.&#8221; Incompetence drives me crazy.</p>

<p>Eager to expand use of the Web to advertise their products, pharmaceutical giants, including Eli Lilly (LLY) and Pfizer (PFE), are heading to Washington this week to call on the Food and Drug Administration to provide guidelines for marketing prescription drugs online.</p>
<p>Wayne Gattinella, CEO of WebMD, is among the drug-industry leaders expected to attend Thursday&#8217;s FDA hearing on online advertising.</p>
<p>Drug companies are dabbling with Internet advertising, but their efforts have been minimal. Most of the ads promote broader health or corporate initiatives, rather than individual medicines. That&#8217;s chiefly due to industry fears of running afoul of regulators.</p>
<p>Seeking a bigger piece of one of the country&#8217;s largest ad categories, Web companies including Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO) and WebMD Health (WBMD) are also planning to attend Thursday&#8217;s hearing at the FDA, which has been scrutinizing drug makers&#8217; digital marketing efforts.</p>

<p>An online news start-up is going where Google (GOOG) and other giants haven’t: sharing revenue with the people who write the news.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.fwix.com">Fwix</a>, a one-year-old start-up backed by BlueRun Ventures, is one of a growing number of portals for “hyperlocal” news, a buzzword that refers to sites about schools, culture, gossip and other information on a neighborhood level. Other hyperlocal aggregators include Outside.In and EveryBlock. Some, like Patch, have their own staff, while others, like Fwix, mostly organize news written by bloggers and community members.</p>
<p>Now Fwix is launching a new advertising product, AdWire, and agreeing to split revenue with the people who write the local information, laying down the gauntlet against big news aggregators from Google on down.</p>

<p>In case you missed it, Google (GOOG) acquired mobile ad network AdMob for $750 million in stock.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a lot of speculation on why, but the obvious reason is that Google wants more direct access to what they are betting heavily on&#8211;that mobile is the next great advertising medium. It&#8217;s made a huge bet on mobile with Android, which is an obvious move to own the mobile search ad market, but now it&#8217;s got its hooks into the mobile display ad market as well. </p>

<p>Google (GOOG) plans to buy back $750 million of its common stock to offset dilution from shares to be issued in the pending all-stock acquisition of AdMob, CEO Eric Schmidt told Bloomberg yesterday.</p>
<p>In a research note, Broadpoint.Amtech analyst Benjamin Schachter notes that this will be the first time Google has ever repurchased any of its own shares, despite its $22 billion cash position.</p>

<p>Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT) and Yahoo (YHOO) are all offering some form of courtesy Wi-Fi through the holiday season, at venues such as airports, hotels and Times Square.</p>
<p>Each has a relatively new service it’s hoping to attract consumers to, whether it’s Google’s Chrome browser, Microsoft’s Bing search engine or Yahoo’s revamped home page and customization features.</p>
<p>Google is working with Wi-Fi providers Boingo Wireless and Advanced Wireless Group to provide connectivity at 47 airports, including Boston, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami and Seattle from today until Jan. 15 (sorry New Yorkers, JFK, LGA and EWR are not on the list).</p>
<p>“We know that this is a very hectic travel season for people, and we hope that free Wi-Fi will make both traveling and connecting with friends and family a little bit easier,” Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president of search, said in a statement.</p>

<p>The China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center has released the latest list of “vulgar content” offenders (in Chinese). This time, Google (GOOG) escaped mention&#8211;but Yahoo (YHOO) China and a popular real-estate portal, Soufun, did not.</p>
<p>The list referred to user-generated content on a section of Yahoo China’s Web site called “Yahoo Space,” which is not currently in operation. But a subsequent notice released today by the center said remnants of the “vulgar” content from Yahoo Space could still be found in other parts of Yahoo’s portal.</p>
<p>The Web sites “didn’t continue to follow the government’s call to effectively crack down on vulgar content and information on the Internet, and relaxed supervision of their Web sites, which ultimately led to the appearance of a lot of vulgar content, which is against social morals and does harm to the physical and mental health of the youth,” the center said in a notice. “Such behavior…has led to the anger of our public and should be strongly condemned.”</p>

<p>Google Inc.’s (GOOG) announcement that it will buy AdMob Inc. for $750 million brought a media spotlight on Accel Partners, an investor in both AdMob and Playfish Inc., which said today it will sell to Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS) for at least $275 million. Several blogs, including this one, hailed Accel Partners for its impressive and quick investment returns at a time when deals like these are hard to come by.</p>
<p>But AdMob’s founder and CEO, Omar Hamoui, really deserves the attention for building a company that in three years became the largest player of mobile Web ads and ultimately, a coveted jewel for the largest Internet company.</p>
