Electronic Arts: Widespread Downgrades; Is It a Target?

Eric Savitz

Is Electronic Arts producing games that people just don’t want to play? Because they’re sure not buying them. Countless analysts are downgrading the stock–and while many are convinced the slowdown is just EA’s problem and not prevalent in the industry, skeptics attribute most of it to the economy. Which all begs the question: Is the company vulnerable to a takeover?

So Much for Being Recession-Proof, Electronic Arts Warns

Eric Savitz

A little bit of vulnerability surfaced in the videogame industry today. Electronic Arts, admitting that its holiday game lineup isn’t selling as well as hoped, warned that its revenue and earnings would be below guidance for the March 2009 fiscal year.

EA Plays the Microsoft Game

Jim Goldman

If Electronic Arts’ unsolicited bid for Take-Two Interactive sounds a lot like Microsoft’s unsolicited play for Yahoo–complete with both EA and Microsoft ultimately walking away–think again.
It’s only a little bit surprising that EA walked, mostly because Take-Two was in a far stronger negotiating position than Yahoo.

Did Amazon Delete Spore Reviews? [Updated]

Mike Masnick

Want to know how not to respond to criticism? By deleting it. Yet it appears that’s what Amazon has done. Earlier this week we wrote about the controversy of EA’s decision to put cumbersome DRM on the highly anticipated video game, Spore. A Sneak Peek at Spore, EA’s Ultra-Web 2.0 Game

Wagner James Au

I finally understand why Spore has been delayed for so long. Originally expected for a 2007 release, the simulated evolution game from Electronic Arts studio Maxis was suddenly withheld, much to EA’s chagrin. Maxis head Will Wright explained the delay, saying that the company wanted to make the follow-up to its wildly successful Sims franchise more accessible. That turns out to be an understatement, as I found out this week at an advance press peek hosted at Maxis’ Emeryville, Calif., office.

About Voices

This is a section of the All Things Digital Web site featuring posts from around the Web, from other Dow Jones properties and also original pieces we solicit. The section is now explicitly labeled that it comes "from other Web sites."

We are fully aware of the controversies around how linking and aggregating is done on the Web and we, in no way, are attempting to "scrape" original content created by others. Instead, regarding third-party posts, we are trying to point readers of this site to other posts from around the Web that we admire and are trying to do so in the quickest manner possible.

The Internet is full of terrific content that is not ours and we want to help our readers find it by making editorial suggestions--Look, Mom, no algorithm!--of posts we think are worth their time.

That is why we have made even more changes to Voices to ensure we do this in the most transparent and timely way. While we don't expect that everyone will agree with our policies, we have made changes that reflect our intent in pointing to content outside our site.

So here is exactly what we do: Read more »
