Good News on Microsoft Earnings: Xbox Sales Tanking

Sometimes the good news is the bad news. Or vice versa.

Consider, for instance, today’s call on Microsoft by Caris & Co. analyst Curtis Shauger.

In a research note today, Shauger warned that weakening Xbox sales were likely to hurt top-line results for both the fiscal first quarter ending September and for the June 2010 fiscal year.

T-Mobile’s 4G Solution: Rent From Clearwire and MetroPCS?

Deutsche Telekom, parent of U.S. mobile operator T-Mobile, is holding talks about gaining access to spectrum controlled by Clearwire and MetroPCS as a way to build out 4G wireless service, according to Bloomberg, which cites “two people familiar with the matter.”

What’s Up With RealNetworks?

RealNetworks shares have spiked more than 10 percent this morning, on zero news.

TheStreet.com notes that there has been “heavy upside options activity” in the shares, asserting that “volume was nothing short of explosive” in both the stock and the options.

Take-Two Slides; Wedbush Turns Cautious

Take-Two Interactive shares are trading lower after Morgan Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter cut his rating on the stock this morning to Neutral from Outperform. He keeps a $13 price target on the stock, which closed Friday at $11.73.

Clearwire Launches Test in Silicon Valley

Clearwire today announced the launch of its a developer version of 4G service in the Bay Area. The developer version of the WiMax-based network covers “more than 20 square miles” in Santa Clara, Mountain View and “parts of downtown” Palto Alto.

Oracle May Spin MySQL to Win EU Okay for Sun Deal, Analyst Says

In order to win European Union regulatory approval for the pending acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Oracle may need to spin-off or sell Sun’s MySQL open-source database business, according to analyst Trip Chowdhry, of Global Equities Research.

Coming: The Great Smartphone Shakeout

So here’s the thing about the smartphone market: there are way too many of them.

The year 2010, JMP Securities analyst Samuel Wilson asserted in a report this morning, “should be the year of the shakeout in smartphones.” He believes most of the market share and carrier focus will consolidate around three vendors.

Yahoo Rises as Merrill Turns Bullish

Yahoo shares are on the rise this morning after Bank of America/Merrill Lynch analyst Justin Post lifted his rating on the stock to Buy from Neutral, increasing his price target to $19, from $17.

Post describes Yahoo as “a growth company which is now trading like a long-term secular decliner.”

BusinessWeek Attracts 93 Bidders

McGraw-Hill CEO Terry McGraw said the company has received interest from 93 potential buyers for Business Week, Bloomberg reports.

In an interview on Bloomberg Television, he said interested parties include private equity, hedge funds and strategic buyers. “Everybody’s involved,” he said.

AT&T: Seth The Blogger Guy Responds on Network Issues

So, AT&T has jumped into action in response to the growing chorus of complaints about the deteriorating quality of the company’s wireless network: they’ve posted a video by someone called Seth the Blogger Guy. (He’s actually Seth Bloom, who works in the telco’s PR group.)

Half of Solar Firms to Fail, Analyst Says

Half of the existing solar manufacturers may not survive through the end of next year, according to the market research firm The Information Network, as reported by DigiTimes.

The piece said Information Network chief Robert Castellano believes “massive inventory buildup and huge overcapacity” are having a serious impact on solar panel manufacturers.
