SAP (SAP) and Teradata (TDC) plan to announce Monday a joint effort to make the German company’s software work better with Teradata’s database systems, the latest example of tech companies combining hardware and software.

A growing number of vendors have begun offering servers that come bundled with particular programs, styling the combinations as appliances that are easier to install and manage than components sold separately. Oracle (ORCL) in October announced a joint effort with H-P (HPQ) to offer a “data warehouse” machine that was designed to better search through corporate information better than standalone hardware and software from the two companies.

Not a good day for eBay (EBAY) shares, which are down 23 percent for the year to date, and now sit at their lowest level since 2001.

Highlighting the problem of counterfeit merchandise sold on the site, Bloomberg reports that the company provided a tip to German police that triggered the seizure of 20 tons of knock-off designer clothing last month. While it is certainly good to see eBay taking an aggressive posture on fake goods, the company clearly has an issue to resolve here. As Bernstein Research analyst Jeffrey Lindsay notes in the story, eBay is “only as good as its worst seller in the minds of its customers.”

The story also notes that eBay has been sued by a number of luxury brands for not doing enough to insure that sellers don’t peddle fakes.

Infineon (IFX) shares are down sharply this morning after the company provided an extremely grim outlook for the fiscal first quarter ending December and for all of fiscal 2009.

In the third quarter, the German chipmaker posted revenue of 1.15 billion euros, up 12 percent sequentially and two percent year over year. The company posted a loss before interest and taxes of 220 million, due in part to charges of 253 million euros for cost-reduction measures. The net loss from continuing operations was 244 million euros, or 0.33 euros per share.
