Unable to get the attention of the wireless carriers, Dell (DELL) has decided to enter the mobile phone market by selling its wares direct through retailers, according to Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar. The analyst writes that the carriers have decided to pass on Dell’s handset, “citing a non-compelling product with a roadmap that lags competition.”

Kumar is not optimistic about Dell’s chances for success with that approach, asserting that the company is “facing a stacked deck with little experience on how to play this game.”

Kumar wonders whether consumers will want a phone that the carriers consider to be not good enough to sell directly. “Consumers are used to subsidized handsets and are not used to paying full price,” he notes, and assumes that retailers will provide prime shelf space for Dell’s phones.

Dell (DELL) CEO Michael Dell has done little to dispel rumors that his company is working on a mobile computing device. In fact, he all but confirmed them while traveling in Japan on March 24 when he said: “It is true that we are exploring smaller-screen devices.” What form those devices will take remains a matter of heated debate. Talk is that Dell plans a smartphone that would compete with Research In Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry, Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, and the various devices running software from Microsoft (MSFT), Nokia (NOK), or the Google-backed (GOOG) Open Handset Alliance. Prototypes of a Dell-made smartphone are being circulated in the wild and, according to Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu, got a cool reception from mobile-phone carriers including AT&T (T) and Sprint Nextel (S).

Well, everyone else is in the phone business, so why not Microsoft (MSFT)?

There are several reports suggesting that the company may soon do exactly that.

On Friday, tech news site TheInquirer.net reported that the company is developing a phone that will use an Nvidia processor called Tegra. The phone supposedly will be launched at the 3GSM conference this coming February.

Today, CNBC offered a slightly different version of the Microsoft phone rumor, asserting that the company will create a Zune-based phone code-named “Pink,” which could be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. There have been rumors about the nature of the company’s “Project Pink” going back at least a year; back in May, ZDNet reported that Pink consists of a set of consumer-focused premium mobile services, including some from its Danger acquisition.

In the heyday of rock music, no stadium gig was complete without a slow number that prompted the crowd to hold aloft their cigarette lighters to create hundreds of flickering points of light. Now the same effect is created by hundreds of people holding up their mobile phones as the audience takes photo after photo to prove they were there.

This is most likely to occur in the U.K. as the British use their mobile phone as a camera more than anyone else. They are also among the world’s fastest adopters of social-networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo, posting the subsequent photos or at least updating their status to relate how great the gig was, as a way of keeping in touch with an ever-expanding and ephemeral collection of “friends.”

Trouble in the mobile phone business continues to mount.

Following up on disappointing results this week from both Research In Motion (RIMM) and Palm (PALM), Sony Ericsson (SNE, ERIC) this morning said that sales and pre-tax net income in the second quarter would “continue to be negatively affected by moderating demand of mid-to-high end mobile phone,” as well new as product delays.

By using more computers and mobile phones, we can cut carbon dioxide emissions by 15 percent and save $1 trillion in reduced electricity and fuel costs, according to a study from something called the Climate Group.

Bloomberg reported on the study, which it notes was funded by, among other people Microsoft (MSFT), Cisco (CSCO) and Nokia (NOK), the world’s leading providers of PC software, networking equipment and mobile phones, respectively.
